Why manga text recognition is different
Manga mixes artwork, speech bubbles and text in changing layouts. Japanese may run vertically down columns or horizontally across a panel. Small furigana sits close to larger kanji, while sound effects may bend, overlap drawings or use stylized lettering.
Text detection first has to find a useful region. Recognition then has to read it. A region that combines a main line with tiny reading aids can be confusing even when the page looks clear to a person. Low resolution and unusual fonts add more uncertainty.
How CenjiReader approaches the page
CenjiReader runs a text detector and Manga OCR recognition locally in a browser worker. Automatic detection starts when you open a book, respects your pause and disable preferences, and prioritizes the current book and nearby pages.
Subtle boxes appear progressively around recognized text. They leave the original printing visible so you can compare the result with the page. Hover or use keyboard focus to highlight a region, then click it to inspect the recognized text.
The first OCR use downloads roughly 467 MiB of models and runtime, with dictionaries downloaded separately. WebGPU is used when available, with a CPU/WASM option and fallback. Setup and processing speed depend on your device; reading can continue during preparation.
Turn a speech bubble into a lookup
A detected region can contain a phrase or a line, rather than a perfectly isolated word. Click the region to open the learning panel, then choose an individual vocabulary item for its reading and English definitions.
This connects manga dictionary lookup to text recognition. Listen and vocabulary states sit beside the results, keeping the next step close to the page.
Check results, especially small or stylized text
OCR is an aid, not a verified transcription. It may miss a bubble, confuse similar characters, include decorative marks or struggle with tiny furigana and sound effects. Manga layout and print quality vary too much to promise perfect results.
Compare the recognized text with the original, correct it in the learning panel and retry lookup. For a missed area, choose Reader settings → Select missed text. You can re-run a page or pause automatic detection without losing existing clickable boxes.
An online reader with local processing
You open CenjiReader on the web, but your page images and OCR text are not uploaded for recognition. Downloads fetch public model and application resources. Once resources are cached, supported offline workflows can continue in the same browser.
