Bring your own files
Import PDF, DRM-free AZW3, CBZ, ZIP, JPG, PNG or WEBP from your device. PDF pages render locally, and archives keep their page order. You can also try a free licensed Japanese sample before importing. CenjiReader does not remove DRM or publish your imports.
Large books need enough browser memory and storage. Password-protected PDFs are not supported.
A reader that gives the page room
- Single pages, double-page spreads and vertical scrolling.
- Right-to-left or left-to-right reading direction.
- Fit height, fit width, actual size, zoom and fullscreen.
- Page rotation, adjustable spacing and display preferences.
- Saved reading position and view settings in this browser.
Automatic text boxes, with room for corrections
Open a book to start automatic Japanese OCR. The current book and nearby pages take priority. Boxes appear as text is recognized; hover or focus a box to highlight it, then click to open readings and meanings.
Pause or resume detection, retry a page, toggle boxes, copy recognized text or use selectable-text mode. Correct a misreading or use Reader settings → Select missed text when necessary. See how manga OCR works and where it can struggle.
Readings and meanings in the same workspace
The built-in Japanese dictionary provides English definitions and kana readings. Word analysis helps you choose vocabulary within a detected phrase, and dictionary-form lookup can help with inflected words. Type Japanese or romaji in the Dictionary view, too.
Reading annotations can be adjusted in the learning panel. They are not a guarantee of complete furigana over every printed manga character. Learn more about dictionary lookup and readings.
Pronunciation when you press Listen
Listen beside selected text or a dictionary entry to hear Japanese pronunciation. Press Stop to end playback. CenjiReader uses a local Japanese speech voice, preferring natural or neural voices when the device offers them.
No cloud voice account is required, and selected text is not sent to a speech service. Voice quality and availability depend on your browser and device. If no local Japanese voice is available, install one through your device’s language settings and reopen the browser.
Keep words worth returning to
Use Learn for unfamiliar vocabulary, Known for words you recognize, or Ignore when a result is not useful. Review up to ten due learning words at a time, reveal their meanings, and choose Again or Remembered to schedule the next practice. Edit personal notes and export your list as CSV. Words saved from a page can retain their reading context.
The Dictionary study panel adds recent searches, notes, slow pronunciation and original example sentences and common forms for selected words. All study data stays on your device; no account or subscription is needed. Our manga reading guide suggests ways to balance lookup and continued reading.
Local storage, backups and offline reading
Once the app and resources are cached, your imported pages and learning tools can work offline. You can install CenjiReader as a PWA when your browser offers it. Models and dictionaries download separately on first use.
Request persistent storage and make full backups in Settings. Browser data can be cleared or evicted; a metadata backup does not contain your manga images. Read the storage and privacy explanation before moving between browsers or devices.
