What is CenjiReader?
CenjiReader is a free, browser-based Japanese manga reader with OCR, a built-in dictionary, readings, pronunciation and vocabulary tracking. It brings reading and lookup into one interface.
Does CenjiReader provide manga?
CenjiReader includes a small collection of licensed Japanese Pepper&Carrot samples to try for free. You can also bring your own legally obtained PDF, DRM-free AZW3, CBZ, ZIP or supported image files. Your imports are never published.
Is CenjiReader free?
Yes. Reading, OCR, dictionary lookup and vocabulary tools are free. Donations are optional and do not unlock features.
Does CenjiReader upload my manga?
No. Your files and learning data stay in this browser on your device. The website downloads public application files, dictionaries and OCR models; it does not receive your manga or search terms.
Can it detect Japanese text from manga?
Yes. Automatic local OCR detects text and adds clickable regions, including vertical Japanese. Stylized lettering, small furigana and complex page layouts can be misread or missed. You can correct text or select a missed area manually.
Can I use it to learn Japanese?
CenjiReader can support reading practice with dictionary meanings, readings, Listen buttons and saved vocabulary. It works best alongside grammar study and listening practice; it does not promise fluency from manga alone.
What do I need to get started?
You can read and run automatic OCR on current iPhone, iPad and Android browsers or use desktop Chrome or Edge. Mobile devices automatically use an approximately 38 MiB lightweight Japanese OCR pipeline to avoid memory-related tab closures. It creates clickable boxes locally, although stylized or very small text may be less accurate than with desktop OCR. Audio requires an installed local Japanese speech voice.
